Early last week, we brought you a first look at the new 2014 Scion tC King of the Coupe commercial. Filmed at various locations around downtown Los Angeles, the spot showcased everything from the tC’s new aggressive styling to its improved suspension and handling dynamics.
As promised in our previous blog post introducing the spot, we’re bringing you a behind the scenes look at the process of filming the 2014 Scion tC’s new broadcast commercial.
Base camp for all of our equipment was located in an empty parking lot, just off the side of the 110 freeway. You’ll also notice in the photo that we brought along a Blue Streak Metallic tC for the shoot. We can’t reveal what for just yet, so you’ll have to stay tuned to find out.
Once we got settled in, the film crew began moving their equipment over to our first location. The Absolutely Red 2014 Scion tC, which was the star of the day, was already on site ready to begin shooting.
Just about all of the scenes in the new commercial involve the camera following the tC as it’s in motion, which of course meant that the camera we used had to be similarly mobile. So, to allow the camera to keep up with the 179 horsepower sports coupe, we employed a special pursuit vehicle to film the spot.
While the equipment was being prepped, we had some time to get a closer look at the Absolutely Red tC. A lot of its styling has been refreshed to give it a more aggressive profile, but among our favorite changes are the new six-element LED tail lamps.
With everything set up and ready to go, we were finally ready to begin filming our first scene of the afternoon.
A lot of the footage we ended up using in the final spot were tightly cropped shots of the 2014 Scion tC driving by. To accomplish that, the camera was carefully positioned in place as a professional driver behind the wheel of the car sped past.
The street we were filming on was closed off, allowing us to safely repeat takes as necessary until we got the desired shot.
As the morning stretched into the afternoon, lighting conditions changed with it which meant equipment had to be moved around in order to maintain a consistent look throughout.
Multiple passes were filmed, which gave us a bank of shots to choose from when putting together the final, completed spot, which can be viewed below. All said, we’re pleased with the way it showcases the 2014 Scion tC, and we hope that you’ll agree.
