Chocolate City All Stars presented by Garth Trinidad

Since 1996 Garth Trinidad's Chocolate City has aired on 89.9fm KCRW in Los Angeles and kcrw.com worldwide to critical acclaim. As an award winning, world traveling DJ and unique hustler of culture, Garth is considered the foremost curator of urban alternative music and culture with top-ranking career highlights that span music programming and supervision for film & TV, advertising, online & in-flight entertainment, studio music and live event production, and music journalism. As a voting member of NARAS , Garth sits on the Grammy Awards R&B board in support of the new 'best urban alternative performance' category, created as a direct result of his continued approach to music programming.
Hungry to nurture and house an international identity for urban artists from all nations, Mr. Trinidad exploits stereos and club speakers to seduce minds and bodies with varied music philosophies. He's broken artists like Jill Scott , Van Hunt and Gnarls Barkley and primes his radio canvas with progressive and familiar soul, R&B, hip hop, and jazz, while the rebirth of cool comes courtesy of such rising stars as Seu Jorge , Sa-Ra , Steve Spacek , and J-Davey with hopes of catapulting them into mainstream status. Garth's approach to rocking parties is a fusion of world rhythms and beloved beats from many genres. One might find him finessing samba, bhangra, and afro-beat with classic hip hop, R&B, house, and other assorted dance rhythms. Over the years he's lubricated dance floors in South America, Western Europe, and across the US, with a constant presence in Los Angeles.
Steadfast in his mission to cultivate a global urban alternative, Garth has been heard as music commentator on NPR syndicated programs "News and Notes" and "The Tavis Smiley Show" , and been found blogging, interviewing artists, and programming play-lists for Napster and iTunes . As music consultant and supervisor his client roster includes UPN , Nike , FX Network , PBS , Mitsubishi , Infiniti , and United Airlines with record production credits from Warner Bros , Atlantic , Rhino , and BBE . Companies such as Nike , Adidas , Puma , Ford , and Toyota have contracted Mr. Trinidad to host events, sport apparel, and drive cars for his ability to influence the market as a respected tastemaker.
2005 saw the launch of Garth's multi-media company Garth Trinidad Sound and in 2006 he celebrated 10 years of Chocolate City with a series of intimate concerts, the creation of limited edition sneakers with éS , the sporty extension of Etnies , and a special feature and mix CD with Re:Up Magazine. As music supervisor in 2007, he's helping HBO add some additional music flavor to the hit show "Entourage" and has assisted critically acclaimed director Stacy Peralta (Dog Town & Z Boys, Riding Giants) in a gut wrenching study of South Central LA gangs for release in 2008.
Chocolate City's loyal and passionate listeners over the years are simply a reflection of Garth's own character: he is passionate about the music and embodies the very soul he spins on air. There is no tidy box to encapsulate the show's sound – but everyone who tunes in, never tunes out.

No Static At All presented by Rob Wonder

No Static At All puts a number of different genres together to expose people to a wide variety of musical styles so that their ears do not get bored. You will find R&B, Soul, Funk, Club, Rock, Pop, and Electronic....No Static also unveils new songs and artists that are fresh out of the A. Rob Wonder does it in a way that represents the open mindedness of the city he lives in...Atlanta.
Direct from the southeast sector of the USA, Atlanta, GA to be exact, Rob Wonder is a DJ that has been running things under the radar for the last 12 years. Rob Wonder aka Dick McWhoady has played a key role in solidifying Atlanta as an institution- as a DJ, club owner, promoter, radio and television personality, record store proprietor, innovator, accelerator, king maker, and room shaker Rob Wonder has left no musical stones unturned. Able to bend musical genres in a single bound, make people move at a switch of the pitch, this Dirty South vet has rocked clubs and crowds with the upper echelon of musical impresarios.
Those who think southerners move at a slower pace should try keeping up with this Georgia Boy. His resume goes far beyond his accomplishments as a DJ- his entrepreneurial adventures include the legendary record store More Dusty Than Digital and most recently Atlanta's best kept secret El Bar. His work as a promoter was undeniably essential to independent Hip Hop and Club Music in the city. His events gave local DJ's a place to hone their craft, as well as exposed Atlanta to groundbreaking national acts. Rob also brought the DMC and ITF battles to the city for the first and only time.
His eclectic high-energy relentlessness brought him to the attention of Scion and he became a traveling resident DJ for Scion Metro parties across the U.S at their inception. His 2003 mix, The Adventures of Dick McWhoady, was featured by Complex Magazine as one of the best indie/underground releases. That same year he was named regional winner in the Scion "Free Up Your Mix" contest. In 2005 he released The Adventures of Dick McWhoady II, and recently dropped his mind-warping new Mix CD “Back It Up”.
In his hometown he has been a resident of the infamous MJQ since 2000 and you can find him there every Saturday night leading the Sneak Attack. ATL shawty don't disrespect it...

Making the Beat presented by 45 King - Guest: Double J

Producer "The 45 King" burst onto the rap scene during the late '80s with his bona-fide breakbeat classic "The 900 Number." However, following successful productions for Queen Latifah and his own crew, the Flavor Unit, the 45 King's resistance to changing trends and hip hop's own fleeting loyalty combined to ensure his eventual obscurity. Continually respected by the hip-hop underground, he remained a prolific producer throughout his career, lending his remixing and engineering skills to nearly 40 releases from 1987 to 2000.
Born Mark James, the 45 King (as he prefers, simply, to be known) got his first taste of rap music in the late '70s as the "record boy" for Bronx-based rap pioneers the Funky 4 (pre-Plus One). Learning the ropes of the hip-hop trade, James received an invaluable insider's look at the coveted breakbeat records that were the very battle tools of DJ competitions. Departing from the Funky 4 circle, the 45 King spent the mid-'80s as a DJ on the New Jersey scene. In 1983, at the age of 22, his first production for MC Marky Fresh caught the attention of KISS-FM's Kool DJ Red Alert. It wasn't until 1987 that James' career really got underway however, with his work for Wild Pitch artist Latee on "This Cut's Got Flavor." That same year, the 45 King slowed down the sax solo from a record he'd received from Tuff City's Aaron Fuchs, and dropped the results over an irresistibly funky break. The resulting track, "The 900 Number," exploded, its horn line (sampled from Marva Whitney's , James Brown-produced "Unwind Yourself") forever ingrained in the collective hip-hop psyche. The 45 King was awarded a production deal and a long-term contract. He proceeded to showcase the members the Flavor Unit on a series of Tuff City releases. Debuts from Lakim Shabazz (Pure Righteousness) and Chill Rob G ("Court Is in Session") were released in 1988. The following year, new Tommy Boy recording artist Queen Latifah selected the 45 King to contribute tracks to her debut All Hail the Queen. The collaboration produced Latifah hits "Wrath of My Madness" and "Ladies First."
However, Tuff City failed to get behind Shabazz's sophomore, 45 King-produced Lost Tribe of Shabazz (1989), and the album drifted into obscurity. Eventually dropped from Tommy Boy, Latifah relocated to Motown, and the new label's efforts to polish the rapper's sound meant the 45 King's services were not requested. Suddenly, the confines of a long-term contract failed to appeal. James spent the early '90s remixing, producing, and constructing his own phenomenal solo recordings under titles like Lost Breakbeats, Breakapalooza, and The 45 Kingdom. In 1996, DJ Kool's recycling of the 45 King's classic "900 Number" took off, climbing to number five on the rap charts. Acknowledging the song's source, the MC released a new 45 King remix of the track. James' resurgence coincided with the growing interest in hip-hop's old school stylings. In 1997, England's Ultimate Dilemma paid tribute, reissuing the producer's Lost Break Beat series as Universal Beat Generation. One year later, the 45 King's production of Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)" (complete with Annie sample) scaled the charts, proving the producers lasting viability. He also did ''STAN'' for Eminem and won another Grammy Award.

The Rub presented by DJ Eleven, DJ Ayres and Cosmo Baker - Guest: DJ Mel

In July 2002, The Rub began with a simple goal: the creation of a classics and hip-hop party to be held on the first Saturday of every month at Southpaw. However, it was the approach that has made it click. We do it Brooklyn style: great dance music mixed well, affordable drinks, and real people; no dress code, no bottle service, no VIPs and no celebrity DJs. The combination of great music, a hot and sweaty dance floor, and phenomenal word-of-mouth buzz for the party brought the people there. The unparalleled mix of hip hop, disco, 80s, reggae, funk, house and everything in between keeps them coming back. The Rub has been widely recognized as the best club night in New York City for several years. The Rub was named both "the best party in Brooklyn to dance sweatily to smart music" by the Village Voice and "the best party in NYC" by The New York Press. Ayres, Eleven & Cosmo have also been also featured on MTV Mixtape Mondays, in The New York Times, Spin, Vice, XXL, XLR8R, The Fader, The Wire, RE:UP, Tablist, Hip-Hop Connection (UK), Spray (France) and on countless websites. The Rub was in URB's Next 100 for 2006. In addition, the three DJs have been releasing mixtapes at a breakneck pace, traveling to gigs across the country and around the world, and put out two official Rub CDs and 6 records. In 2006 DJ Ayres and Cosmo Baker won Scion's Free Your Mix Contest and The Rub created mixes for Scion, Burton, Enyce and Ecko Unltd. Over the last few years, The Rub boys have DJed in over 50 cities in the US and Canada, England, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Israel, Thailand, The Bahamas and Puerto Rico alongside Public Enemy, Fat Joe, Snoop Dogg, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slick Rick, Hollertronix, Mark Ronson, A-Trak, DJ Premier, The Donnas, MSTRKRTFT, Justice, Spankrock, Flosstradamus and Grandmaster Flash, to name a few. In 2007 they are concentrating on The Rub Remix CDs & vinyl releases, releasing many many more mixtapes, and bringing The Rub to party people around the globe. Scion & The Rub bring you The Rub Radio: the past, present, and future of hip-hop. From Bronx-bred breakbeats to the newest & unknown, we got it! Come and roll with The Rub as we put you up on new joints & take you back to the classics.
