Buff Monster makes paintings about pink things. The brightly colored landscapes of nipples, mounds, clouds are finely painted on found metal. Ice cream, heavy metal, porn, Los Angeles and graffiti are the main inspirations for his work. The paintings are fun and ridiculous though clearly created with intention and care to detail. Pink as a color and an idea is key to the work, and his phrase "Pink is Power" makes that clear.
Buff Monster is primarily known throughout the world as a street artist. The project started with hand-drawn characters on flattened spray paint cans nailed throughout the city. He continues to hand cut and silkscreen the thousands of posters that have made the Buff Monster "a Los Angeles institution." For nearly four years he has consistently improved the Los Angeles landscape, and given some attention to San Francisco and Tokyo as well. He also paints abandoned store fronts on occasion.
He shows his artwork throughout Los Angeles, New York, and many places in between. He has completed work for Nike, Hurley International, Ocean Pacific and other large companies. His work has been published in magazines like XLR8R, Quest, Elemental, Plaza, Rojo, Monster Children and books like Pictoplasma 2, Street Logos, The Art of Rebellion, Coast to Coast. His first individual exhibition was reviewed in Artweek and LA Weekly, and his recent individual exhibition was covered by the City Pages and The Onion.
Born in Hawaii, he moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California. He earned a BA in Fine Art and a minor in Business Administration. He started his graphic design career as an intern at one of the nation's largest magazine companies. Currently he is the Creative Director of BPM Magazine.
