Race Recap – Formula Drift, Round 5: Throwdown at Evergreen Speedway 23 July 2012, 10:04 pm

Congratulations to Ken Gushi and the GReddy Racing team for their 4th place finish at Formula Drift, Round 5 this past weekend at at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. This is Ken’s best finish of the season as he moves up to 11th place in the overall standings.

In the qualifying runs on Friday, Ken scored an 81 and 83, putting him in the solid 14th position for the tandem brackets. Tony Angelo qualified 30th while Fredric Aasbo came in at 7th.

For the Round of 32, Ken repeated a matchup from Palm Beach where he lost against Kenneth Moen in a Nissan 350z. This time, however, Ken was victorious.

During the Top 16, Ken competed against and defeated another Nissan. This time it was the RS*R S15 driven by Toshiki Yoshioka. That set up Ken for another rematch from earlier this season—Conrad Grunewald in the 2010 Hankook Camaro SS. Grunewald ended up spinning his Camaro, giving the win to Ken.

With only 4 drivers remaining, Ken’s FR-S became the only non-V8 left in the field. The turbocharged 4-cyclinder was matched up in the Semi-Finals with Ryan Tuerck in the Retaks Racing S13. With Vaughn Gitten Jr. already in the finals, Ken was just win away from a chance at the top of the podium! Unfortunately, the win went to Tuerck and Ken moved on to the consolation round.

With a chance for 3rd still on the table, Ken gave his all going “door to door” against Rhys Millen’s Genesis Coupe. It was a close final run but Millen received the judge’s favor and took the win. The team finished just one spot short of the podium, but it is a strong testament to  how far Ken and GReddy Racing have progressed thus far in the season.

As for the other members of the Scion Racing family, Fredric made it to the Top 16 before being knocked out by Ryan Kado. Tony lost out to Toshiki Yoshioka in the RS*R S15 during the Round of 32.

Next stop on the  Formula Drift calendar is Round 6 in Las Vegas, August 24 and 25.  All three are itching for a spot on the podium, so expect a lot of excitement as usual!

Stay tuned for the next episode of Driven to Drift.
