Ken Gushi and the RS*R Scion Racing tC Take a Podium Spot at Round 6 of the Formula DRIFT Series
TORRANCE, Calif. (Aug. 27, 2009) - Scion Racing's Formula DRIFT driver, Ken Gushi, piloted the RS*R Scion Racing tC to a phenomenal second place finish this past weekend at Round Six of the Formula DRIFT series at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Fellow Scion Racing driver Tanner Foust also had an outstanding weekend, finishing in fourth place in the Rockstar Energy Drink Scion tC.
"This entire season the RS*R Scion Racing team put in their blood, sweat and tears to help put this tC on the podium. It just felt like everything came together and worked," said Gushi. "We will come back even stronger for the final round and definitely give the fans some exciting tandem battles to watch."
Gushi started off the weekend with a strong eighth place qualifying position. As the competition progressed, Gushi defeated three top drivers and earned himself a spot in the "TOP 4" round where he lined up against Scion's own Foust. In the battle of the Scion tCs, Gushi managed to get the win over Foust and moved on to the final round. The battle for first place ended when Gushi's 400 horsepower engine suffered a mechanical failure against eventual winner Stephan Verdier.
The second place finish marks Gushi's highest achievement of the season, exceeding his fourth place performance at Round 3 in New Jersey. The win earned the RS*R Scion Racing team a total of 91 points, positioning him in 12th place in the points standings.
"Having both of the Scion Racing tCs in the 'TOP 4' was a remarkable achievement and to have even just one of them on the podium in the end is truly awesome," said Steve Hatanaka, Scion auto show and special events manager. "We look forward to putting on a great show at the final event for all of the fans and hopefully end the 2009 season with another win."
Qualifying 21st out of 32 drivers, Foust had his share of tough battles including facing teammate Gushi in the "TOP 4" round. Despite falling to Gushi, Foust and the Rockstar Energy crew had much to celebrate as their fourth place finish put them within a mere 30 points of a 2009 Formula DRIFT championship podium spot.
"Sonoma was a great event for the entire Scion Racing team because half of the top four finishers were driving Scions," said Foust. "Going into the final Formula DRIFT round within 30 points of a championship podium is a great testament to the Scion tC and to the Rockstar Scion drift team's ability to build winning cars. I'm excited to see where the Rockstar Scion tC will take us in the future."
With one round remaining in the 2009 Formula DRIFT series, drivers will be fighting for those last remaining championship points. Round Seven takes place October 15 and 16, 2009 at the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif.
