Petra Mrzyk and Jean-Francois Moriceau

Petra Mrzyk (1973) and Jean-Francois Moriceau (1974) live and work in Nice. Each project by Mrzyk & Moriceau is a direct reaction to a certain gallery space which changes into a stage of a brilliant drawing performance. The simplest medium - drawing - done on the plain "canvas" - the gallery wall - seduces the viewer with its frankness in a spontaneous and impulsive act of creation and transforms the existing space in a dynamic breathing network of visual extravagance. Mrzyk & Moriceau’s universe is inhabited by an extremely numerous army of metamorphic creatures, characters of comic books and tales, old pictures and newspaper advertisements, wallpapers and wrappers and also actors with great imagination. This unusual microcosm of absurd is one of many versions of the scaring projections of their own fantasies, where fiction meets with reality and confuses perception. The banality of the everyday life is mixed with a sublime references to the history of art, especially surrealism. Nostalgia and the retro style of a Hollywood film, grotesque and black humour of the tale, kitsch and the banality of a tattoo - these are major qualities of the alternative reality which is on the border of hallucination and the psychedelic. Here the interrupted narration is the only way to activate the pop-culture’s anaemic communication. Petra Mrzyk & Jean-Francis Moriceau are also authors of morphic video animations (the exhibitions presents the clip to a song by a famous French group "Air") in which the choreography of one line constructs visual combinations that merges into a dynamic sequence of simplified images.
